App-V Applications

Application objects of type ‘App-V’ can be associated with a Microsoft App-V 5 Package (APPV-file), or an App-V 4.x project (SPRJ-file). Other supported App-V 4.x files are OSD- and SFT-Files.

App-V 4.x is a client server system for providing streamed virtual applications to users.
App-V 4.x offers a server management console for managing the App-V 4.x server.
Scense will completely take over the server management, by creating, updating and removing App-V 4.x objects on the server.
It is however possible (and sometimes recommended) to let Scense control the App-V 4.x client directly and go without a streaming server.

App-V 5 is also a client server system, but differs in a very important way; there is no streaming server. This difference is the main reason why Scense does not integrate at all with the App-V 5 server part. The App-V 5 client does the streaming all by itself, from either UNC or HTTP and both these ways are supported by Scense.

After attaching the App-V file, App-V specific features are available.

App-V 4.x

This is how the Application property page looks for App-V 4.x applications

Package File.

Specifies the associated App-V package.

OSGuard File.

Specifies the path to the OSGuard.cp file within the App-V package.
If the App-V package is attached using an SPRJ- or OSD-file this OSGuard path will be inserted automatically.
If the package is attached using the SFT-File, the OSGuard path must be entered manually.
The correct path to the OSGuard file can be retrieved using software like ‘SFT Explorer’

Package Name.

The name of the package is read from the SPRJ- or OSD-files. If an SFT-file was used to attach the package, the Package Name has to be specified manually.

App-V Server.

The Name of the App-V server. This server name is read from the ‘AppVServer’ site parameter, but can be overruled by a manual specification.

This is the server on which Scense Explorer will register the Application and Package.

Never stream from server.

Scense offers the possibility to run App-V applications without streaming them from a server.
When ‘Never stream from server’ is checked, Scense Explorer will not register the application at the App-V server, but instead allow ‘Client-Only’ operations without an App-V server.

App-V 5

Package File.

Specifies the associated App-V package.

Package Name.

The name of the package is read from the App-V package.

Run Application event inside virtual environment.

Unlike App-V 4.x applications, App-V 5 applications can be run directly from the file system. This eliminates the need to run the entire application event inside the virtual environment.
There are, however, some situations in which you might want to run the application event inside the App-V 5 bubble. For these occasions this checkbox can be checked.
There will be a slight performance penalty for running the application event inside the virtual environment.
